Title: Resources to support safer care for patients at risk of autonomic dysreflexia

Broadcast content:

This alert signposts providers to resources to support safer bowel care for patients at risk of autonomic dysreflexia.

Providers are asked to use the resources to review local clinical policy and guidance relating to bowel assessment and management, and to review local training and education provision, particularly around the care of patients with spinal cord injury or neurological conditions that have led to neurogenic bowel dysfunction.

Additional information: NHS England regional teams, please cascade this alert to GPs.

Can you please include the following text in your covering email to explain the relevance of the alert to general practice: 'Although GPs would not be expected to lead on the policy/training actions contained in this alert, you need to be aware of the need to act quickly when a patient at risk of autonomic dysreflexia is not receiving the bowel care they need, and appropriately escalate care for affected patients'.
